What We’ve Learned {Blogging}

Our first month with MiamiFunFamily has been fun, exciting, very time consuming, and a great learning opportunity for all three of us. Throughout the process we have learned many, many things. Here a just a few:

SET-UP A GENERAL CALENDAR

After much reading, thinking, participating in an online blogging “class”, writing, and trying to write, we came to the conclusion that creating a yearly calendar was of much importance. We created a calendar and input important yearly events (i.e. back to school), major holidays, not so major holidays, and activities that we have done or would like to plan for a certain time of year (i.e. medical checkups). This, we hope, will help us streamline the topics for each month so that our posts are somewhat cohesive.

SCHEDULE BLOG TIME

We also decided (as of this week) to schedule blog time into our weekly routine. We will be meeting once a week to plan our posts. Again, we hope that, together with our calendar, we will all be blogging on complementary topics. We were spending too much time reading other blogs and then would get distracted into web surfing for hours at a time. We will  now write posts first, play second. We’ll let you know if this works out for us!

SCHEDULE FACEBOOK UPDATES

We now will begin to schedule our Facebook updates. A friend recommended HootSuite and we are hoping this will help us with several issues:

  • Remember to update our status on Facebook.
  • Plan updates that are relevant.
  • Post items that are different from what we blog.

Again, we are just beginning to implement this plan, so we’ll see how it goes!

NEED TO GET BETTER ACQUAINTED WITH TWITTER

Although between the three of us (maybe just two) we consider ourselves pretty technologically proficient and at least Tiza and I have had personal Twitter accounts for a very long time, we really don’t understand the benefit to the blog. So…..our fabulous friend Patty has promised to help us get up to speed on the subject. After we meet with her, we hope to add Twitter to our HootSuite account in order to help us manage our tweets!

We have an endless “to do” list in regards to the blog, but we hope that one month from now we will have been able to resolve many of our blogging issues, questions and hopes and dreams!

Do you blog? Let us know what you consider to be one the most important things you have learned about blogging. We will be sure to keep you updated on our progress!

Back to school

As school begins for my four beautiful grandchildren, I sit back and contemplate what that means. For them It means they are growing, they are not who they were last year. They, with each experience hopefully, have become more intelligent, all rounded human beings.  With each day they have learned to make more decisions in their own lives, becoming more their own person. Life is teaching them about the consequences of right and wrong.  They are beginning to understand that growth comes from experiences and mistakes. So many changes occur in only one year of their life.

As it is with children, it is with us adults. One year can bring incredible changes both physically, mentally and intellectually. As I have aged I have witnessed this continuous change. Each event in my life has molded and formed me into this person I am today. I, as are my grandchildren, am changing, learning and growing, trying to keep up with this always changing world. As I see it, the advantage we adults have over our children is that we already know that we can change. We know that our decisions will have consequences and that with any luck will make our life better. We also know that in the process of living we will make mistakes and it is from those mistakes we learn. We know that nothing in life is permanent, it is forever changing and it is with this knowledge we can teach our children to not fear living life to their fullest potential. We can by example also teach them how important it is to not watch life pass them by but rather be a participant.   At any age it’s all about challenges that require us to make constant decisions. Some will be bad and perhaps bring us anger or tears while others will be successes that will bring us the greatest of joys.

So, I am reminded of a quote that says,

“We regret more about the things we didn’t do than the things we did do. Get out of yourself and just do it.”

That’s good for any age to remember, don’t you think?

ONE more week of summer vacation left in Florida!

Is it good? Is it bad? or sad? I think I am ready to get back to our routine. Funny enough, the girls are really excited to get back to school ASAP. I’d like to think it’s because they also miss the routine, but it most likely has to do with seeing their friends.

Summer – the season Vs. Summer – the vacation

Now, although I have absolutely no control over our school/vacation schedule, I have decided to try my very best and extend the vacation “mood” as long as possible. I’ve been over-analyzing what it is about summer vacation (other than the no-school part) that makes us feel so, well, summery? In our family’s case it’s the pool, beach, more casual meals, and plenty of relaxed family time.

So, thanks to our fabulously extended summery South Florida weather we’re going to try to celebrate summer – the season – as opposed to summer – the vacation. We’ll try to make it to a pool or a beach on the weekends and for our everyday routine, we’ll try to make time for casual family time and infuse that relaxed feeling into our meals. Here are some brilliant recipes I found on Pinterest:

I’d also like to be more practical and experiment with make ahead meals so our evenings can be dedicated to more talking, playing and laughing, and less chopping, cooking and cleaning.

Finally, I think it will be fun to simply shakes things up a bit with little unexpected surprises:A whimsical outdoor setup – Source: tumblrCoffee table with seating on cushions - Source: PinterestA bright and fun Bandanna table runner (so easy!) – Source: Country Living

I can’t wait to see how my little experiment works out! Do you have any “cease-summer” anxiety? I’d love to know how your family handles the end of summer. Leave us a comment below :)

Keep having “sunny” fun!

Book Worth Reading ~ One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus

One of my great enjoyments in life is reading.  There is nothing like being able to curl up with a good book in a comfortable chair while sipping a good wine.  Reading is so special for me that I plan those days where I can do just that.  I find it is important to have these quiet “me” times, as I feel It recharges my batteries after days of being busy.  Let me tell you about the latest book that I have read. It is called “One Thousand White Women” by Jim Fergus.  A fascinating read based on true events that took place in 1875 but is related  through fictional diaries. An inspirational book to sit with and contemplate the strength of our pioneer sisters.  They fought to be themselves and often were humiliated and tortured because they refused to be anything else but themselves. A great read to be able to appreciate those who came before us and at great sacrifice, helped us all to get where we are today.

“Books are the plane, and the train, and the road. They are the destination, and the journey. They are home.”
― Anna QuindlenHow Reading Changed My Life

Happy reading!

Celebrate {SUMMER}

Although it almost seems like end-of-summer mourning in the blogsphere, I say: “Carry on summer! School or no school… we have you till September 21st (astronomical last day of summer)!”

I am also a believer of celebrating for no reason at all. It’s a take on being grateful. A great Tuesday, a lost tooth, beautiful watermelons, or just because… Just celebrate! So, let’s put summer lovin’ and celebrations all together into a fun inspiration session:

For kids and adults, for friends or just for a memorable family night in. Next time you decide to “just have a barbecue”, re-think and add a little something special, fun, and summery to the plan. Remember: “There is no day like today”… Just celebrate!

Have a great weekend,

Live The Moment

My daughter said to me, “Mom, don’t leave the posting until the last minute”.  As I assured her that I wouldn’t,  I deep down knew I hadn’t taken the time to write anything as yet.  Not because I was lazy or even procrastinating but because I have company and the reality is that spending time with my dear friend held precedent over my blogging.  My posting was always in my mind but these two weeks I have been blessed with a long over-due visit by my friend.  We have filled our days with lots of remembering, giving her a tour of the sights of our great city of Miami, we read and shared our opinions on whatever we were reading, whether it be a book, newspaper or magazine.  We talked about politics, love, getting old, grandchildren, our children.  We were up late like two teenagers looking for goodies to munch on…..oh yes, there was lots of eating, and lots of laughing.

As I sit to write this, I have come to understand that one of the great things about aging is that you realize first things first.  Ann came first!  Now here I am sharing these thoughts with you all.  Reminding everyone that with all the wonderful techy stuff that fills our world right now, there is nothing more valuable than life itself. There is nothing more important than sharing a hug, smile, and laughter with those you love. The older one gets the easier it is to step back and see the big picture.

Speaking of the big picture, Ann introduced me to the most delicious candy.  The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory candy.  For me the enormous slabs of chocolate smothered and almond covered toffee are to die for and Ann equally loved the bear paw sized milk chocolate pecan bears.  Well, our diets will have to start tomorrow…

Keep living the moment!

Are You Ready for School?

We are two weeks away from the first day of school and I’ve started panicking! I make lists for EVERYTHING (it must be a family trait), so I didn’t make one list, I made three! I have my “must-haves”, “first day of school” and my “wish list”, so here it goes…

Back to School List

We’ve pinned a few ideas onto our Pinterest. You can go here for lunch box ideas, and here for back to school treats, teacher quizes, gifts and more!

I hope all of this helps you get ready!
