Take the Time

I visited Venezuela this month, and while there I was asked by my husband’s family if I would prepare a Thanksgiving type dinner for my mother-in-law to celebrate her 92nd birthday. I was able to offer a beautiful meal to share with my husband and his family in celebration. It was a wonderful feeling to to be able to bring the family a dinner made with much care and love and feel that it was so very much enjoyed. My goal was only to bring joy and delight to our family. Mission accomplished!

Class Treats {Welcome Fall}

I thought it would be nice to create a treat for the boy’s classrooms to celebrate the start of the fall season. I bought a couple of foam pumpkins at Walmart and made a couple of easy peasy class treats! Alex and Dani loved them and thought it was great that they could take treats for their classmates.

Supplies:

  • Foam pumpkins from Walmart
  • Dremel Rotary Tool (although mine is an old non-cordless version)
  • Small wooden skewers
  • Lollipops
  • Printed message
Instructions:
  • Drill holes (as many or as few as you’d like)
  • Insert lollipops
  • Print and attach your message to the skewers and all to the top of the pumpkin

That’s all folks, it was as easy as that! Make one for your kids and you will see their happy smiling faces.
Cheers!

Celebrate {100 Days ’till Christmas!}

Can you believe it’s only 100 days ’till Christmas? Wow. Any day now and I’ll need to have my shopping done, the class treats planned and made, decorations pulled from storage and set out, Christmas tree up….Yikes!

Well, I guess in the mean time I’ll just waste a bit of my time and checkout what other, more organized and planned people have already done for the holidays! Here are my faves…

  • This would be cute either to have at home (like I need any more sweets with easy access!) or to send to the kid’s classroom for the teacher to handout as rewards.

  • I don’t really follow Advent traditions but since the kids would be able to see that there is SOMETHING there, I think the excitement would be inevitable and fun!

  • I never know what to do with all the beautiful and thoughtful cards I receive over the holidays. This is something I could easily do and it looks super cute!

  • Even though the Miami weather is “cold” all of two or three days each winter, the school building is freezing all year!!!!!! This would be a nice treat for the teachers and would help keep them toasty warm!

OK, enough dreaming and hoping that I’ll be able to do all these great ideas (or will I?) What are your goals for the holiday season? Have you created your own “to do”list?

Cheers!

Celebrate {October}

I can’t believe that it’s nearly fall! Although we don’t really see or feel the difference in weather because we live in Miami and the changes and VERY subtle, we do begin celebrating the season and the holidays!

I grew up in Venezuela, where the weather is a balmy 75 degrees year round and Halloween is not even a holiday! So, needless to say, fall and October holidays are something I have celebrated only since I have lived in the USA, but I have embraced it happily! So…October here we come! My wish list has many, many projects that I would love to take on, but I have to be realistic, so here is my Celebrate {October} to do list:

Harvest/Fall Home Decor: This year I’ve decided to decorate for the season. I really like this wreath and my plan is to make not one, but two!  I have a double door as my front door, and I think this would look beautiful! Also, Tiza and I went to the Dollar Tree this morning and bought something that I might use to enhance my harvest/Halloween wreath…You’ll see what I do later.

Halloween classroom favors: My kids are still young enough that they enjoy taking treats to their classmates as often as possible. Yay!!! This gives me a great excuse to make something new. I found this VERY easy treat that I just might just use as inspiration to make this year.

Get costumes for the kids (and maybe something for me?): When I saw this costume I thought is was awesome! I’ll have my kids choose their costumes now so that I’m not scrambling to put it together at the last minute.

Plan our 9th Annual Halloween Celebration: I need to send out the invitation or Evite (haven’t decided) and would like to make a new decorations for the house. This is sooooo cute!!

ONE more week of summer vacation left in Florida!

Is it good? Is it bad? or sad? I think I am ready to get back to our routine. Funny enough, the girls are really excited to get back to school ASAP. I’d like to think it’s because they also miss the routine, but it most likely has to do with seeing their friends.

Summer – the season Vs. Summer – the vacation

Now, although I have absolutely no control over our school/vacation schedule, I have decided to try my very best and extend the vacation “mood” as long as possible. I’ve been over-analyzing what it is about summer vacation (other than the no-school part) that makes us feel so, well, summery? In our family’s case it’s the pool, beach, more casual meals, and plenty of relaxed family time.

So, thanks to our fabulously extended summery South Florida weather we’re going to try to celebrate summer – the season – as opposed to summer – the vacation. We’ll try to make it to a pool or a beach on the weekends and for our everyday routine, we’ll try to make time for casual family time and infuse that relaxed feeling into our meals. Here are some brilliant recipes I found on Pinterest:

I’d also like to be more practical and experiment with make ahead meals so our evenings can be dedicated to more talking, playing and laughing, and less chopping, cooking and cleaning.

Finally, I think it will be fun to simply shakes things up a bit with little unexpected surprises:A whimsical outdoor setup – Source: tumblrCoffee table with seating on cushions - Source: PinterestA bright and fun Bandanna table runner (so easy!) – Source: Country Living

I can’t wait to see how my little experiment works out! Do you have any “cease-summer” anxiety? I’d love to know how your family handles the end of summer. Leave us a comment below :)

Keep having “sunny” fun!

Celebrate {SUMMER}

Although it almost seems like end-of-summer mourning in the blogsphere, I say: “Carry on summer! School or no school… we have you till September 21st (astronomical last day of summer)!”

I am also a believer of celebrating for no reason at all. It’s a take on being grateful. A great Tuesday, a lost tooth, beautiful watermelons, or just because… Just celebrate! So, let’s put summer lovin’ and celebrations all together into a fun inspiration session:

For kids and adults, for friends or just for a memorable family night in. Next time you decide to “just have a barbecue”, re-think and add a little something special, fun, and summery to the plan. Remember: “There is no day like today”… Just celebrate!

Have a great weekend,

Celebrate ~ Housewarming Gift

A friend invited us to see her new home and although we see each other all the time (school, karate and around the neighborhood, etc.) I have never been to her house and therefore have no idea what her style is. So,  when I saw this idea on Mel’s Kitchen Cafe‘s site, I new this would be a great housewarming token. It’s easy, inexpensive and yummy. Plus, it will add a useful cookie sheet and dish towel to my friend’s new kitchen and some quick cookies for her entire family.

House Warming Gift - Frozen Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

I prepared the cookie dough per Mel’s Kitchen Cafe instructions and after freezing the dough balls for a few hours, I put them into a nice plastic container (that my friend can reuse at her new home), put it all on a cookie sheet and added a cute dish towel. I added a ribbon to tie it all together, an instruction card and a handwritten personal note.

Alex, my eldest, asked if we could bake some cookies about ten minutes after we arrived at our friend’s home, so, we baked about a dozen cookies, the kids enjoyed them thoroughly and she still has a bunch to bake another day!

Congratulations on your new home Lore!

Celebrating ~ National Sugar Cookie Day!

I have no idea how this day came to be, but according to the Holiday Insights website, July 9th is National Sugar Cookie Day! So, needless to say, we MUST celebrate! Here we are baking and decorating some very easy sugar cookies. We bought the Pillsbury pre-made, refrigerated dough and Betty Crocker cookie icing. Easy and fun.

Happy National Sugar Cookie Day!

Celebrating ~ 4th of July

We had a wonderful day for our July 4th celebration. My boys and I gathered with family and friends at the JC Bermudez Park in Doral, for an afternoon of playing, running, talking, eating and enjoying!Sofi, Gaby, Alex and Dani

Tiza, my mom and I prepared (or bought) yummy food: sandwiches, pasta salad, fruit salad, sangria, decorated marshmallows and cookies. Here are a couple of the recipes:

Chicken with avocado sandwiches - I was inspired by a recipe online but ended up making it diferently. I bought sliced roasted chicken at the deli and prepared a  spread with avocado, diced tomato, red onion, salt, peper and a slpash of lime juice. The combination was delicious!Chicken and avocado sandwichChicken and Avocado sandwich

White Sangria - I mixed one bottle of white wine with a can of diet Sierra Mist. I added a shot of Brandy, cubed appples and peaches, a bit of sugar and cheers!White Sangria
