Out and About {Pinecrest Farmer’s Market}

Pinecrest Gardens Green Market

For the last couple of years I’ve gotten my veggies and fruits from a great organic co-op. For reasons too complicated to explain in this post, I opted out in June and have been very messy when it comes to our family’s fruit and veggie grocery store purchasing and home consumption. So, I decided to start a local Farmer’s Market adventure. I want to see what I can find, how much it’ll cost me, how much organic variety is offered, and how much is local.

Veggies and fruits and…

My mom and I ventured out bright and early on Sunday and here is some of what we found:
Miami Fun Family - Farmer's MarketTons of vegetables, herbs, fruits, some meats, eggs and a few prepared foods.

Miami Fun Family - Pinecrest Farmer's Market

The people from Coconut Grove Farms had an amazing variety and they were all very knowledgeable. About half there produce was organic but not all local.

Miami Fun Family - Farmer's Market Middle Eastern food

We bought stuffed vegetarian grape leaves and baklava. I would go back for more of the grape leaves any day.

She was the sweetest girl and let us sample her dried fruits and leather (like store bought fruit roll-ups except no sugar or preservatives).Miami Fun Family - Pinecrest Farmer's MarketThe Healthy Break people were sooooo nice and offered these great spreads. The cool thing is that everything is olive oil based with no mayo added. Serious homemade flavor, perfect for a lunch, snack, appetizer or for a cocktail party. Miami Fun Family - Farmer's Market SmoothieMiami Fun Family - Farmer's Market Spiced Nuts

These nuts were DELICIOUS! She had fantastic suggestions for serving: with salads, with fruit and cheese platters and as a healthy snack. Can’t resist temptation? {thespicednutfactory at gmail dot com}

Did I stop eating long enough to photogragh EVERYTHING?

No. I had better things to do… taste test all free samples offered, talk to everyone, eat more, have smoothie, etc. I was very busy. However, I’ll mention a couple other vendors that caught my eye:Copperpot Jams & Jellies (loved the sweeet jalapeño flavor), Proper Sausages (we actually bought some for lunch and had an overcooking until way-too-charred incident. even then, delicious),and Kreative Gardenswith their spectacular succulents, money trees, and other exotic plants.

All in all…SUCCESS! I scored a good variety of fruits for snacks and lunchboxes, plenty of veggies for everyday meals, and even a money tree for my house! So, check your local markets and make time to visit one, ask questions, buy and cook something new for your family, and enjoy!

YUM Restaurant {Giraffas @ Midtown Miami}

Today I went with fabulous friends to a new restaurant in town ~ Giraffas ~ Brazilian Steaks and Burgers. The location we visited is in Midtown in Miami. I have to say it was MUCH better than I expected!

They are located in an area where parking is easy and they have a choice of indoor and outdoor dinning. The set-up is “fast food-ish” with the menu displayed on the wall and the ordering done before you are seated. Then they give you a number and they bring you your order to the table.

The ambience is less fast food and more restaurant, very family friendly and the food was great!!! We decided to share a few different dishes so that we could all try more than one. Unfortunately I was unable to take pictures, but the pictures on their site are pretty accurate so I took them from there! So here is what we had:

Grilled Picahna: the meat was tender, juicy and grilled to the perfect medium rare that we ordered.

Filet Mignon Tips Stroganoff: The dish was creamy and very tasty. The mushrooms and onions made the perfect combination with the creamy sauce and tender filet mignon tips.

Giraffão Filét Burger: The patty was more like a slice of filet mignon heaven! And the cheese, bacon, egg and lettuce just made it even more delicious!

Grilled Picanha Burger: Again, great quality meat and cooked perfectly juicy – event the bun was nice and warm!

Now I’m really excited that they will be opening a store about 2 minutes from my home. I will surely enjoy their food more frequently!

Summer 2012 Series – Week 6

Week was a not-too-busy but still fun week. I’m truly slacking on the crafting and home activities front, unless TV watching counts? No. Didn’t think so :) Here is a quick recap of what we did:

  1. Super fun and quirky birthday party at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens -  I wrote about this unforgettable celebration here. Check it out!Vizcaya birthday party
  2. Free movie & park – Every year we take advantage of the free movies at local theaters. Although the movies are not the latest releases, it’s still a great (and cheap) escape from the summer heat. We saw Alvin and the Chipmunks – Chipwrecked. If you haven’t seen it yet, rent it! Except for the voices (does it only bother me?), the music is fun and the story is entertaining. Here is the trailer. At Regal Cinemas you can still take advantage through  next week. Click here for a list of theaters, times and movie options. After the movies we headed to Doral Meadow Park In case you guessed, this picture is off the internet. I didn’t take my own photos because I was too busy catching up with girlfriends (aka – serious therapy /solving world issues session) but the kids had a great time. Although the playground is shaded, always clean and very well maintained, our kids preferred to practice “gymnastics”, run around the whole park, memorize dance routines, etc. The energy!
  3. Dinner at ZUMA – One of my very best friends was in town with her husband and we went out to dinner to this downtown hot spot. Our babysitting arrangements didn’t pan out as planned so the girls ended up going with us as well. The decor is chic, the service was very attentive and incredibly knowledgeable (I ask TONS of questions – yes… I am THAT person), the food… oh, the food… was AMAZING. I spent the whole meal oooh-ing and aaaah-ing, talking to my bestie, feeling incredibly proud of Sofi for wanting to try every one of the dozen or so dishes, and not taking pictures. Sorry! I will tell you this: visit Zuma soon and try the panko fried oysters. I don’t know the trick, but the oysters were perfectly RAW on the inside of the golden deliciousness!
  4. Birthday party at Jumpin’ Jamboree – a fantastic option to escape from the heat (and a little rain on this particular day). Kids jump and bounce to their heart’s content giving parents a chance to relax in the wonderful A/C.Birthday at Jumpin' Jamboree

Only a couple of weeks left! I hope you are enjoying your families and friends and taking advantage of this magical summer.

Keep having fun,

“Palace Princess Bieber” Birthday Party

Celebrating a 5th birthday a la “Palace Princess Bieber” way

Yesterday we had another crazy yet great summer day with friends. My friend’s daughter turned 5 and we were invited to take a tour (guided by my not-so-shy friend with info sorta-made-up-on-the-fly) of one of Miami’s historical landmark’s Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.

PROLOGUE ~ mixed with a touch of behind the scene action:

my friend: “What should I do for her birthday? I thought we could visit Vizcaya. What do you think?”
me: “I LOVE Vizcaya! My girls are dying to go there” (note: I got married there and the girls have seen pictures of the place all over our home.)
my friend: “But touring the house only takes a little while. I was thinking a little tea party at the cafe. Cute, right?
me: “Or we can have a picnic at the park in the grove. They have an awesome playground”
my friend: “Hummmm… But it’s so hot and then I have to take food…”
me: “Just take cupcakes and we’ll order pizza”
my friend: Hummmm… Maybe the girls can all go dressed as princesses and I’ll go to Party City and get princess themed stuff”
me: “Gaby would rather die than pretend she’s a princess. Sofi might go with it”

The next day
my friend: “We went to Party City and she chose Justin Bieber

The End

We ended up touring the “castle” (more accurately described as James Deering’s 1916 summer home) with 11 giddy kids that were actually a lot more into the whole thing than I would’ve thought possible. My friend aced the castle spiel complete with the “King’s” bedroom and gardens “where Princesses used to stroll”.

We miraculously got a couple of decent bay and garden pictures in spite of the unbearable heat and crazy humidity. And even in a 100 year old regal garden, kids do what they do best. They run and play. What did we end up doing afterwards, you wonder? Pizza & pool party with the Biebs plastered on napkins and plates. Soooo Vizcaya Princess, right?

During the pool party we had a not-so-tea-partyish banquet. Especially considering the fact that Sofi thought it was genius to eat pizza AND pb&j sandwich at the same time. Yes. Together. (Please don’t worry about her health…it was accompanied by a yogurt!)
And it all ended with the birthday girl blowing out her candles with the Biebs watching all along (although upside down).

 THE SCOOP ON VIZCAYA

  • Official website here
  • The center courtyard skylight is currently being replaced so that area is closed off
  • Due to the construction, admission fees are reduced through September the 14th
  • It can get very hot on a sunny day. Make sure to take water and wear sunscreen if you plan to walk the gardens
  • Mark your calendars for January 2013 when Vizcaya’s famous moonlight tours will resume

Keep having fun,

Summer 2012 Series – Week 4

  1. Unpack from trip to Guatemala and attempt to re-establish order at home – not fun and not completely accomplished.
  2. 4th of July celebration – We had a really great time at Doral’s JC Bermudez community celebration. Diana posted about it in detail here. There were plenty of people and lots of kids playing all around.

Although we really enjoyed it, we want to try a different spot next year. Maybe at The Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables?

  3. Sick – Yup. You read right. SICK. First I assumed I had sparkler fumes caught in my nostrils, but when my body started aching and I had the unmistakable shivers, I released the innocent sparklers of all suspicions and decided to place all blame on the airplane flight (and all that germ-y recycled air) from Guatemala (which coincidentally was warmer than usual). I did experience a high point during my flu-ish experience when Sofi surprised me with a “meal”:Sofi loves hard boiled eggs (Don’t worry, she didn’t cook them herself – I keep eggs hard boiled in the fridge at all times for convenient snacks or salad add-ons) and fruits. After she proudly watched me photograph the plate – notice the silver tray, the fancy coaster and crocheted holder for the glass – she came right back over and ate the eggs. All of them. It was the best meal I ever had to share.
  4. Zoo Miami – I thought I was feeling better (plus I am way too frugal for my own health and I really wanted to take advantage of the Ford $5.00 weekend) so off we went to the zoo. Continue reading

Celebrating ~ 4th of July

We had a wonderful day for our July 4th celebration. My boys and I gathered with family and friends at the JC Bermudez Park in Doral, for an afternoon of playing, running, talking, eating and enjoying!Sofi, Gaby, Alex and Dani

Tiza, my mom and I prepared (or bought) yummy food: sandwiches, pasta salad, fruit salad, sangria, decorated marshmallows and cookies. Here are a couple of the recipes:

Chicken with avocado sandwiches - I was inspired by a recipe online but ended up making it diferently. I bought sliced roasted chicken at the deli and prepared a  spread with avocado, diced tomato, red onion, salt, peper and a slpash of lime juice. The combination was delicious!Chicken and avocado sandwichChicken and Avocado sandwich

White Sangria - I mixed one bottle of white wine with a can of diet Sierra Mist. I added a shot of Brandy, cubed appples and peaches, a bit of sugar and cheers!White Sangria

Guatemala – Chocolate Lesson

During our visit to Guatemala we planned a weekend stay in Antigua. With non-stop rain on the first day and after an as-long-as-possible babysitting effort by the dads while my friend Ana and I braved the weather for the always noble “shopping with your girlfriend” cause, our kids were a more than a little restless and we were looking for entertainment options. Ana knew of a chocolate shop with some sort classes for children that I did not ask too much but rather ran trying to get there before they closed.

ChocoMuseo Antigua, Guatemala

We arrived at the quaint Choco Museo shop just as Pablo, the chef and instructor, was cleaning up and preparing to close for the day. Noooooo! “Can you imagine how bored these kids are after all this rain? I asked him. “We NEED something to do!” I pleaded. So after convincing him that he could shorten the original 2 hour class to however much time he could give us and agreeing to use the dark chocolate because the milk chocolate was all gone… his conscience won him over and he obviously took pity on the beyond-desperate looking parents. Summer 2012 Series – Week 2

Miami Fun Family - Summer 2012 Series - week 2

  1. Fairy gardens – Thanks again to Pinterest, I have WAY TOO MANY projects on my mind. Several fairy garden pins like this one, this one, and this one (and still several others on MFF’s “backyard fun” pinterest board) made my imagination run wild with possibilities. I need to make sure you know that I DO NOT HAVE A GREEN THUMB. My mom kept all green/gardening genes to herself! Still, I love gardens and truly appreciate beautiful landscaping. Combine the yard with a little fairy magic and I’M GAME. Here was our starting point: It was a good three hours into our magical adventure and the girls were still enthralled. Incredible what a little fresh air, a few plants, dirt, and no TV can do, right?

Fishing at Matheson Hammock Park and Beach

We went on a fishing expedition to Matheson Hammock and the kids (Gaby, Alex, Dani and Sofi) had a GREAT time!

Gaby, Alex, Dani and Sofi ready for some fishing!

Gaby, Alex, Dani and Sofi ready for some fishing!

We were lucky enough to be saved by a very-senior (80-ish) fishing expert at Walmart who lead us far from the cheapo cartoon character fishing rods and explained to us why the Shakespeare Fishing Kit for just under $17 was SO MUCH BETTER. We don’t know the difference between a rod and a net but he was very convincing… so off we went with 2 new fishing kits.

When we finally arrived at the park, Tio Andy and Tia Leslie were waiting for us and ready to get some fishing going. It took us a good 30 minutes to figure out how to “thread” the nylon through the rod and tie some sort of fishy looking thingys onto them. NOW we were ready for that hundred-pounder!

Although the day ended with no big fish hanging upside down photo, we had plenty of shells, rocks, earth worms, puddle splashing and good ol’ laughing fun. Here are a few pictures to prove it!
